How to Keep a House Clean and Tidy: Tips and Tricks
Keeping a household clean and tidy is one of the most difficult tasks that homeowners face on the daily. You only realize just how much work goes into it once you have a place of your own, and for a lot of people, it can be incredibly overwhelming.
As a junk removal company, we get calls all the time relating to cleaning in the house, and if we offer services for it. While we do offer in-house and backyard junk removal, we also have a handful of tips and tricks that you can utilize in your house cleaning yourself.
We’ve compiled the most important tips into a handy guide to hopefully give you the start that you need to begin keeping your house clean, tidy, and free from unnecessary clutter.
Why It’s Important to Keep Your Home Clean
Keeping your home clean is more important than just the fact that it keeps it looking good. It can have a staggering effect on your mental health, too.
Keeping your house tidy is going to help you feel a lot better in yourself. Not only does cleaning increase the production of happiness related chemicals in your brain, but just being in a clean environment does, as well.
There’s a reason that a look of doctors and therapists advise that to deal with depression, one of the first steps you should take is cleaning your room, which is a great starting point to keeping your house clean.
Not only is it going to help you feel happier, but it also has effects on your productivity. If you’ve ever tried to work in a dirty environment, or with a messy desk, then you know just how horrible it can feel. By keeping your home clutter-free, you’re going to be keeping your mind clear and focused on whatever tasks you have at hand.
It also helps in keeping critters away. In a worst-case scenario, having a dirty home can result in rodent infestation. Rats, cockroaches, and even birds may flock to your house for the bits of rotting food that haven’t been thrown away yet, which can become a massive problem.
House Cleaning Tips and Tricks
We’ve put together a list of tips and tricks that you can employ in your own home to help keep it clean and tidy for longer and avoid having to dedicate hours to one big cleaning session every so often.
Make a Weekly Cleaning Schedule
At the bare minimum, you should be cleaning once per week to keep your house clean. However, a lot of people find that dedication one day to cleaning results in them dreading that day, and can result in a subpar cleaning effort.
If this sounds like you, make up a schedule for each day of what you want to clean. If you use this kind of system, all you have to do is dedicate 15 minutes per day to cleaning a particular room. You could schedule in the bathroom for Monday, the kitchen for Tuesday, your bedroom for Wednesday, the living room on Thursday, and so on.
This lets you break your weekly cleaning requirements into easily digestible, bite-sized chunks and avoids any cleaning burnout. Just make sure that you keep sticking to your schedule to maintain a clean house.
Always Put Things Back in its Place
Most of the time, trying to clean house involves putting things back where they belong. By not taking 30 seconds to do this, you end up building up a mess that takes significantly longer to deal with once you decide to do so.
Things like dishes and clothes are the big ones. How often do you come in from a long day, throw your clothes on the floor, and get into your PJs? Instead of taking the minute to put away these clothes in a laundry basket, you end up with a big pile of dirty clothes that takes up space and is a nightmare to sort out.
The same goes for clean clothes that have just come out of the dryer. If you dump them all at the bottom of the wardrobe instead of trying to put away the clothes properly, you’re going to have one bad headache dealing with them later.
All of us have some level of hoarder in us. We keep household decorations, containers, and clothes that all take up valuable space and make your house look extremely cluttered. While we’re not advising you to throw out all of the cool collectibles you’ve built up over the years, you should make a point of getting rid of the ones that don’t add any value to the room. You can, of course, keep anything that has any sentimental value for you.
You don’t even have to throw these out. Any that are in good condition can be donated or even sold online. Obviously, you can’t do this for all of your clutter; there is plenty that you can make a pretty penny off of.
Get Up and Get Going
Some of us need to hear it, no matter how much we may not want to. The number one contributing factor to messing up a clean home is pure laziness. None of us want to clean. Instead, we’d all prefer to stay on the couch and watch Netflix.
Just try to remember that the hardest part of cleaning the house is getting started. Momentum is a very powerful tool when it comes to cleaning, so the sooner you start, the sooner you can pick up the speed to get the job done fast. Once you get yourself into a routine, the easier it is to keep the house tidy.
Try to Be Minimal
Minimally styled houses aren’t for everyone. However, there is something to be said about the design when it comes to cleanliness. Consider picking strategic parts of your house to keep relatively empty. You don’t need to have a totally blank space but avoid any OTT decoration.
If you have a spot in your living room, you can have a cabinet with maybe a picture frame and lamp on it, a rug on the ground, and absolutely nothing else. This is going to add to the overall cleanliness of your house and help you feel better about the cleaning that you’re doing.
Start small, and start with the bedroom. Starting off your cleaning regime by diving in headfirst is a great way to kill your momentum before you’ve even built it up.
Start with your bedroom, so that you can wake up to cleanliness, and go back to cleanliness at the end of the day. Even simple things like deciding to make your bed can make a massive difference when it comes to getting started.
Don’t Sit Down
If you’re dedicating 15 minutes per day to keep your house clean, don’t sit down when you get home. If you get in from work and have a break, it’s very likely that you aren’t going to start again.
Instead of that, keep your brain working and do the cleaning before you sit down to rest for the night.
Put Things Away
It might sound simple, but deciding not to put away various things around the house is a big contributor to mess. Whether its clothes, dishes, toys, or any other household item, take some time to put clutter away to avoid having a build-up and save yourself the trouble later on.
Start Right Away
It’s safe to say that if you’re reading this, then you have some level of motivation to start cleaning. That motivation isn’t going to last, so start to clean the house as soon as you’re done reading this.
As we said, you don’t have to dive in headfirst. Give the living room a hoover, make sure that the drains in the bathroom are cleared, or make your bed. Even a small start is a start.
Get Some Help
Don’t be afraid to get some cleaning help from the other people in the house. If you have a partner or kids, that’s great, but you can also get some help from friends and other family members.
Even if it’s to get an unbiased opinion of what your home looks like, an extra set of eyes and hands is going to be invaluable when it comes to trying to keep your house clean.
